AI in the Music Room
A few weeks ago, I had the chance to attend an exciting technology conference for educators, and let me tell you, it was fascinating! First of all, the majority of sessions I attended had AI at the center. I’m sure by now, most people have heard of ChatGPT and Gemini, but there is an enormous world of AI tools out there for educators. Most broad educational conferences do not focus on music, so I always have to search for ways to apply things to the field. However, it wasn’t hard to find ways to use the things I learned in the music room.
Among the many cool tools I discovered, one that stood out was called UDIO. It’s an AI-powered website that instantly creates songs based on your prompt. Naturally, I spent time playing around with it and thought it would be fun to show you a creation.
In each of my classes this week, we’re having our Rockstar Celebration. Essentially, every class, my students know that I am looking for a “Rockstar”—someone who is following our “Rockstar Rules.” As they line up to leave, I announce the rockstar, they put a sticker on the class chart, and get to push the rockstar button and the class cheers their name. The excitement builds each time a student fills a sticker on the chart, and once the chart is full, the entire class gets to enjoy a Rockstar Celebration Day!
For this year’s celebration, I thought it would be fun to add something extra to the day, so I decided to use UDIO to create a song specifically for my students.
Here’s what I did:
I told UDIO that I wanted to create a song for elementary music students (grades K-4) about their achievement of reaching the Rockstar Celebration.
I described the qualities of a rockstar:
Work hard
Be kind to classmates and teacher
Raise your hand and wait to be called on
Listen to and follow directions
Respect all instruments
Then, I chose hip-hop as the style of music and clicked Generate.
And here’s the song UDIO created, which I can’t wait to share with my students on the day of their celebration.
